“Puff puff” is a soft fried pastry ball, a classic snack in many countries in Africa including Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ghana. Though the name may differ from country to country e.g. Ghanaians call it “Bofrot”.
Ingredients
- 1 cu p plain flour
- 1 teaspoon dry active yeast
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ½ cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon vegan dairy free butter
- Vegetable oil for frying
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
How to Make It
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg and cinnamon.
- In another bowl, add yeast and sugar to warm water and mix together until sugar and yeast are fully dissolved.
- Add wet mixture to the bowl of dry ingredients and whisk together to make a thick batter.
- Cover the batter and leave in dark place (e.g. oven) for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, add oil to deep frying pan approx. 2 inches deep and place on medium heat.
- When the oil is hot, scoop some batter into hot oil using either ice cream scoop or clean hands, repeat this several times.
- Fry evenly until golden brown on all sides, then remove from hot oil and place in a plate/bowl lined with a paper towel.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 for remaining batter.
- May serve with a dark chocolate dip or another dip of choice.
