Cardamom is the world’s third-most-expensive spice, after only saffron and vanilla, but a little goes a long way. It is extremely fragrant, with an aroma and taste all its own, and its notes pair perfectly with those of coffee. Adding this to a beverage such as iced coffee made with instant espresso is an easy way to impress your guests.
Ingredients
- 1 orange zest, removed with a vegetable peeler
- 2 tablespoons cardamom pods
- ⅛ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ½ cup instant espresso
- ½ to ¾ cup heavy cream
- 6 to 8 tablespoons sugar (optional)
- Ice cubes
How to Make It
- Bring 4 cups water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add the orange zest and cardamom and let steep, just below a simmer on low heat, to blend flavors, about 5 minutes. Add the vanilla and espresso, stirring to dissolve the crystals.
- Strain into a pitcher and stir in cream (to your liking) and sugar (also to your liking, if using). Let cool to room temperature. To serve, pour into tall glasses filled with ice.
