This is not your ordinary ham and cheese sandwich. It’s a deluxe sandwich French-style. Of course, it is topped with a luscious sauce. For a Croque Madame, top the sandwich with a fried egg.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp white flour
- 1/3 cup half and half
- 1/3 cup white wine
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- ¼ cup grated Gruyere cheese
- 8 slices of firm bread
- 2 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 8 slices good-quality ham
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
How to Make It
- Melt the butter in a pan.
- Prepare a roux by stirring in the flour until it’s smooth.
- Continue stirring as you slowly add the cream and wine.
- Add salt, pepper and nutmeg to the sauce.
- Stir in the Gruyere until it melts and turn off the heat but keep the sauce warm.
- Spread some butter on both sides of the bread. 7. Spread the mustard on only one side of each slice.
- Add 2 slices of cheese and 2 slices of ham to four slices of bread.
- Cover with the remaining 4 slices to create 4 sandwiches.
- Top each sandwich with some cheese sauce, leaving some in reserve.
- Fry each sandwich for 4 minutes on each side in a skillet.
- Place the sandwiches on a platter and spoon the remaining sauce over each.
