Chin chin is a fried crunchy snack in west Africa. Usually prepared using flour and several dairy products but this recipe has been altered to eliminate all dairy. Chin chin is often served as an appetiser at parties or offered as snacks.
Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- ½ cup sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon butter
- ½ cup almond milk or coconut milk
- ½ teaspoon nut meg
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- Vegetable oil for frying
- ½ cup plain flour f or rolling
How to Make It
- Add all dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix together with a wooden spoon.
- Add butter and mix in with clean hands.
- Add milk and use clean hands to mix and knead until the dough is thick, smooth and not sticky.
- Leave dough to rest in a bowl for approx. 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, sprinkle plain flour on a clean flat surface and use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a thick sheet (about 1 cm thick).
- Use a pizza cutter or knife to slice the dough into the desired shape. To slice into cubes, slice vertically (1 cm apart) and then horizontally (1 cm apart).
- Regularly sprinkle flour on the dough to help separate easier.
- After slicing, pour vegetable oil into deep pan and place on medium heat for a few minutes to heat up.
- When the oil is hot, add cut out dough to oil (a few at a time) and fry for a few minutes until golden brown then transfer to a bowl lined with a paper towel.
- Leave to cool before serving. Serve as appetiser.
