Ingredients
- Nonstick cooking spray
- 1 pound ziti or penne
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 cup chopped yellow onion
- 4 garlic cloves, minced (2 teaspoons)
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained
- 1 (26-ounce) jar spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce
- 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, plus minced fresh basil for garnish
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
- 2 teaspoons fresh oregano, or ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 cups grated fresh mozzarella cheese, plus more to taste
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
How to Make It
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the onion is tender. Add the meat and cook until browned.
- Drain any grease from the browned beef and stir in the tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, basil, salt, oregano, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Add the sour cream and pasta and stir until combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Transfer half the mixture to the prepared baking dish and top with 1 cup of the mozzarella. Pour the rest of the pasta mixture on top. Top the pasta with the remaining 1 cup mozzarella and the Parmesan. Add a little extra cheese if you like it really cheesy. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling. Top with fresh basil just before serving, if desired.
